Festival of Art - Annual Summer Exhibition

We have a wonderful and well attended annual summer exhibition held at the historic Kennaway House in Sidmouth. Artists may exhibit original artworks, unframed artworks and more recently 3D works (including sculptures). Each year a piece of work is selected for the 'Marion Ovens' award during the official opening of the exhibition and all pieces are eligible for the public choice 'best in show' vote.

This year members are able to submit up to five framed paintings and three unframed paintings for the browser, however the fifth framed painting will be held in reserve and must be securely packaged, wrapped and labelled. 2018 Annual Summer Exhibition Summer Review

The 2018 Annual Exhibition of Artwork was opened with a private viewing on Wednesday the 4th July and ran until Wednesday 18th July, with, we are delighted to say, inclusion of our first batch of 3D Art objects.

Although at 63 the number of artists exhibited this year was slightly down, against 70 in 2017, the proceeds taken were up by over £200. The first item to sold was a 3D work, “Ridged Shell” by Nichola Axe, one of our newest members. The work was carved in Maltese Limestone on Calcite.

The standard of our artists ability seem to be rising every year and this was no exception. I believe this was the highest standard of work I have witnessed at any of our Exhibitions in almost 30 years as a member of the society and the layout and hanging was excellent personally I felt maybe too many painting hung at one time.

The official opening was carried out by Duncan Watt the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the 'Sidmouth Memory Cafe', this years chosen charity. Duncan and colleague Adrian Ford had the task of selecting their choice for the best painting in the show.

This year’s winner was an Acrylic Painting entitled 'Crabber off Sidmouth' by Bryan Dawkins who then received the Marion Ovens Award for best in show.

Bryan also won the visitor's choice of favourite painting in show by the closest of margins over Caron Stephens's 'Flight Home' 42 votes to 40.

Overall an excellent exhibition enjoyed by many. Our visitor record rose considerably from 895 last year to 1115 this year much of this I believe to the efforts of our new Exhibition Officer, Rebecca Lockyear and her merry bunch of helpers. Well done all.
